「方法序説」　冒頭 p8〜

「良識はこの世で最も公平に分配されているものである。というのは、だれもかれも それを十分に与えられていると思っていて、他のすべてのことでは満足させることの はなはだむずかしい人々でさえも、良識については、自分がもっている以上を望まぬ のがつねだからである。そしてこの点において、まさかすべての人が誤っているとは 思われない。むしろそれは次のことを証拠だてているのである。すなわち、よく判断 し、真なるものを偽なるものから分かつところの能力、これが本来良識または理性と 名づけられるものだが、これはすべての人において生まれつき相等しいこと。した がって、われわれの意見がまちまちであるのは、われわれのうちのある者が他の者 よりも多く理性をもつから起こるのではなく、ただわれわれが自分の考えをいろいろち がった途によって導き、また考えていることが同一のことでない、ということから起こる のであること。というのは、よい精神をもつというだけでは十分ではないのであって、 たいせつなことは精神をよく用いることだからである。最も大きな心は、最も大きな徳 行をなしうるとともに、最も大きな悪行をもなしうるのであり、ゆっくりとしか歩かない人 でも、もしいつもまっすぐな途をとるならば、走る人がまっすぐな途をそれる場合より も、はるかに先へ進みうるのである。」

「Good sense is the most evenly shared in the world, for each of us thinks he is so well endowed with it that even those who are the hardest to please in all other respects are not in the habit of wanting more than they have. It is unlikely that everyone is mistaken in this. It indicates rather that the capacity to judge correctly and to distinguish the true from the false, which is properly what one calls common sense or reason, is naturally equal in all men, and consequently that the diversity of our opinions does not spring from some of us being more able to reason than others, but only from our conducting our thoughts along different lines and not examining the same things. For it is not enough to have a good mind, rather the main thing is to apply it well. The greatest souls are capable of the greatest vices as well as of the greatest virtues, and those who go forward only very slowly can progress much further if they always keep to the right path than those who run and wander off it.」
