　「ものをつきとめることの喜び

　僕の友達に絵描きがいて、これがときたまどうも僕の承服しかねるような考え方を主張する。たとえば彼は一輪の花をとりあげて、「ほら見ろよ。実にきれいだろ？」と言ものがう。これには僕もまったく賛成だ。ところが彼は続けて「僕は絵描きだからこの花の美しさがわかるが、科学者の君ときた日にゃ、まず第一にこれをバラバラにしてみようとしたりするから、せっかくの花もてんで味気のないものになっちまうんだ」と言ったりする。これはいささかとんちんかんな言い分だと思う。…

　そもそも花の色合にせよ、昆虫をおびきよせて受粉するようにしけるために次第に進化したもので、つまり昆虫どもに色というものがちゃんとわかるということだから、これだって実に面白い。

　そう見てくるとまったくさまざまな謎が生まれてくる。たとえば下等な生きものにも僕らみたいな美的感覚というものがあるのだろうか？科学の知識はこういった実に面白い疑問を通して、花の神秘さ、胸のときめくようなすばらしさ、そしてこの美しさへの畏敬の念というものをいよいよ大きくするものなのだ。科学は花の美しさにますます意味を与えこそすれ、これを半減してしまうなどとは僕にはとても信じられない。…」

The fact that the colors in the flower have evolved in order to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting; that means insects can see the colors. That adds a question: does this aesthetic sense we have also exist in lower forms of life?
There are all kinds of interesting questions that come from a knowledge of science, which only adds to the excitement and mystery and awe of a flower. It only adds. I don’t understand how it subtracts.」
