　「…そして冷戦においてさえー冷戦は、米国の最も親密な同盟国を含む多数の国に重荷と危険をもたらしていますが、ー最も重い荷を背負っているのは両国（米国、ソ連）であります。なぜならば、両国は共に無知と貧困と病気を克服するために活用できるはずの巨額の金を、大量の兵器生産に投じているからです。一方の側の疑惑が他の側の疑惑を生み、新兵器が対抗兵器を生み出すと入った危険な悪循環に陥っています。

　要するに、米国とその与国およびソ連とその与国はともに、真の公正な平和の確立と軍拡競争の停止に、相互に大きな利害を持っているのです。この目的に対する協定は、米国ばかりでなくソ連も利益になるのであります。そして、どんなに敵対的な国でも、こうした条約義務、つまり自国の利益になる様な協約義務だけは受諾し、遵守するでありましょう。

　だから、われわれは両国のもつ相違点に対して、目を向けようではないか、だが、同時に両国共通の利益と、これらの相違点を解消できるような方策に注意を向けようではありませんか。またこれらの相違点を今すぐなくすことはできないにしても、少なくともわれわれは、世界を平穏に存在させる手助けをすることができるでしょう。

　なぜならば、われわれに共通する最も根本的な絆は、われわれがこの地球に存在しているという事実だからです。われわれは皆、同じ空気を吸っているのです。われわれは皆、子孫の将来のことを考えています。そしてわれわれは（いつかは死すべき）人間なのです。…」

　「And even in the cold war - which brings burdens and dangers to so many countries, including this nation's closest allies - our two countries bear the heaviest burdens. For we are both devoting vast sums to massive weapons that could better be used to combat ignorance, poverty and disease. We are both caught up in a vicious and dangerous cycle in which suspicion on one side breeds suspicion on the other, and new weapons beget counter-weapons.

In short, both the United States and its allies, and the Soviet Union and its allies, have a mutually deep interest in a just and genuine peace and in halting the arms race. Agreements to this end are in the Soviet' interest as well as ours - and even the most hostile nations can be relied upon to accept and keep those treaty obligations, and only those obligations, which are in their own interest.

So, let us not be blind to our differences - but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.

For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is the fact that we all inhabit this planet, We all breathe the same air. We cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal. 」
