知的障害者の思い

Ruby Books(ルビ訳)「アルジャーノンに花束を Flowers for Algernon」
 ダニエル・キイス Daniel Keyes 講談社 1999年

(抜粋)
p196〜
「Only a short time ago(つい最近になって), I learned that people laughed at me. Now I can see that unknowingly(それと知らずに) I joined(加わる)them in laughing at myself.(自分自身をわらいのもにする) That hurts most of all.(何よりつらい)
I have often reread(読み直す)my early progress reports(はじめの頃の 経過報告書)and seen the illiteracy(読み書き能力),the childish naivete(子供っぽい 純粋さ), the mind(精神) of low(低い)intelligence(知性)peering(見つめる)from dark room, through the keyhole(鍵穴), at the dazzling light(眼の眩むほどの光)outside(外の). In my dreams and memories(記憶)I’ve seen Charlie smiling(笑っている)happily(幸せそうに)and uncertainly(曖昧に)at what people around(周りの人間が言っていることに対して)him were saying. Even in my dullness(愚鈍)I knew I was inferior。(劣っている)Other people had something I lacked(欠けている)− something denied(拒む)me. In my mental blindness(知的盲目), I had believed(信じる)it was something(なんとなく) connected(つながっている)with the ability (能力)to read and write, and I was sure(信じる)that if I could get those skills(技能)I would have intelligence too.
Even a feeble(知的障害者)- minded man wants to be like other men.
A child may not know how to feed(どうやって食べたらいいか)itself, or what to eat,(何を食べたらいいか), yet(しかし)it knows hunger(飢え).」
